What is your Ming Gua?

Your Ming Gua is a number from 1 to 9, derived from your year of birth and your gender. In classical Feng Shui it works like the personal software of your destiny: it tells you which of the eight compass directions support you and which drain you, and it is the starting point for every compatibility reading in this project.

Note: if you were born before 4–5 February, use the previous year. The Feng Shui solar year begins at Lichun, not on 1 January.

How the eight directions work

Once you know your number, the Eight Mansions school gives you four supportive and four difficult directions. They matter most for the direction you face when you sleep, work and eat, and for the direction your front door faces.

The four favourable

  • Sheng Chi — generating Qi: prosperity, opportunity, vitality.
  • Tien Yi — heavenly doctor: health, recovery, good support from others.
  • Yen Nien — longevity: relationships, harmony, lasting bonds.
  • Fu Wei — stability: clarity, study, personal growth.

The four unfavourable

  • Ho Hai — small mishaps, delays, irritation.
  • Wu Gui — five ghosts: conflict, gossip, unexpected loss.
  • Liu Sha — six killings: legal and relationship trouble.
  • Chueh Ming — total loss: the most draining direction for you.

People of the East Group (1, 3, 4, 9) share the same favourable directions, and so do people of the West Group (2, 6, 7, 8). Number 5 follows 2 for women and 8 for men. This grouping is the first, simplest layer of compatibility between two people.

The detailed interpretations for each of the nine numbers, and the full compatibility tables for love, work, friendship, family, wealth and pets, are currently published in Greek.
