He Tu means river map. It was discovered by Fu Xi Chinese tribe leader, that lived 4000 years ago. According to the legend, as he was fishing in the side of the river, he witnessed an animal with e body of a horse and the head of a dragon emerging from it. He notices black and white spots on its body. Fu Xi, managed to imprint them, in a dragon/horse diagram. It was the first representation of the five elements. Fu Xi managed to draw the five elements in the cardinal directions a depiction of the ideal world and natural functions, through the five elements Yin and Yang.
In ancient China North was on the bottom and South on top.
This diagram is called He-Tu cross and represents the five Qi forms and their corresponding directions:

Water in the North,
Wood in the East,
Metal in the West,
Fire in the South,
Earth in the Middle.
The Qi of the elements is ordered in a control circle, thus maintaining discipline in the universe.
South/Fire (2-7), controls North/Water (1-6), West/Metal (4-9), Controls East/Wood (8-3).
